The Corky Garden

Our September unit at The Corky Violet is Family and Friends. Week one belonged to the people who live in our children’s houses.

Our Lil Lillies and Lillies

Their unit is Family and Home, and this week was Immediate Family. Our teachers brought in photos of each child’s people and taped them low on the wall, right at toddler eye level. Our Lil Lillies patted them. They pointed. A few of them kissed the pictures.

Mama. Dada. Brother. Every time a child touched a photo, a teacher gave her the word for it.

Our Buttercups

Their unit is My Family and Friends, and week one was Immediate Family. Our Buttercups counted the people who live in their houses. They worked out who sleeps in which room.

Our Azaleas

Their week was Family, and our Azaleas can hold a bigger idea now. They talked about how families come in all sorts of shapes. Our teachers let each child describe her own house, whether that meant four people or nine, and listened to every version.

Why We Start Here

Our children learn outward from themselves. In August our unit was All About Me, and each child studied their own face, their own hands, and their own feelings.
